Dr. Adrienne Mays Presents at Girls Empowered by Mavericks (GEM) Event

Dr. Mays, D.D.S., M.Ed., had an opportunity to speak to more than 50 girls on July 8 as part of a Girls Empowered by Mavericks (GEM) event. The speaking engagement, held at Duncanville High School, covered mental health and mindfulness. Mays’ presentation highlighted mindfulness, help seeking, and signs and symptoms of depression. As the Dallas Mavericks' Official Health Care Partner, UT Southwestern proudly supports their GEM initiative.

Dr. Trivedi Presents to Cook Children's Health Care System

Dr. Madhukar Trivedi presented to the Cook Children's Health Care System regarding the importance of Measurement-Based Care for Depression Treatment. Their providers now have a better understanding of the need for universal screening for depression and other mood related disorders. By screening early and often, those with depression will enter care sooner leading to better outcomes and lessen patient and family suffering.

CDRC Study Reveals Important Information About Innovative Therapies

Dr. Manish Jha and colleagues shared findings about strategies for treating treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in a groundbreaking analysis based on a study published just last year. The analysis revealed that patients with moderate to severe TRD may have better symptom relief from ketamine infusions compared to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), but those with severe TRD could benefit more from ECT early in treatment. The information provides patients and physicians with crucial information that can be incorporated into the shared decision-making process when selecting best treatment approaches for patients.

Dr. Lynnel Goodman and Dr. Tarrah Mitchell Train Their Fourth Cohort of Activ8 Interventionists

Dr. Lynnel Goodman (CDRC at UTSW) and Dr. Tarrah Mitchell (Texas Tech Health Science Center) trained the fourth cohort of Activ8 interventionists. A total of 34 interventionists have been trained since September 2023. As part of the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium, Activ8 is a statewide brief behavioral activation telehealth program for teens to be delivered by lay interventionists. This CDRC-led initiative will increase access to empirically based intervention for teens with depression across Texas. During the training, interventionists were instructed on the implementation of Activ8 and practiced delivering the intervention.

The First Youth Aware of Mental Health Summit is Held

The first Youth Aware of Mental Health Summit, for continuing education of certified YAM instructors, was held in Dallas June 17-18. The 1.5-day event kicked off with a dinner and awards reception – The YAMMY’S – with recognition ranging from instructor with most classes, program manager with most classes facilitated to team awards. The continuing education portion of the summit included a session led by the developers of YAM with international updates, curriculum that covered statewide data overview, region updates including student reach and future direction, as well as a fireside chat with program managers from the various Health Related Institutes, rounding out with statewide future directions.

Dr. Rabia Ayvaci Receives the New Investigator Award

Dr. Rabia Ayvaci, MD, Assistant Professor at the Children’s Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic and CDRC, was selected to receive the prestigious New Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology. This award is designed to support the research endeavors of early-career investigators. As part of the program, Dr. Ayvaci presented her poster titled "Correlates of Treatment Options in Youth with Major Depressive Disorder: Observations from the Texas Youth Depression and Suicide Research Network (TX-YDSRN)" on treatment options for youth depression, based on findings from the TX-YDSRN study.

Dr. Madhukar Trivedi is the Keynote Speaker at the JPS Symposium

Dr. Madhukar Trivedi was the keynote speaker at the 2024 JPS Quality & Research Symposium. This year’s focus was on mental health to target the impact of depression on youth. Dr. Trivedi presented on the "Precision Approach in Depression Treatment” sharing important findings on how implementing measurement-based tools and biomarkers to our field of psychiatry will create precision medicine to our practice, yielding better outcomes for patients. The regional event consisted of breakout discussions, live virtual poster presentations, networking, along with the dinner keynote presentation with over 300 in attendance.

The CDRC Speaks to Harmony Science Academy

Harmony Science Academy in Carrollton invited the CDRC to speak to a group of 8th to 11th graders during Mental Health Awareness Month. Adrienne Mays, DDA, MEd, spoke on how to cope with stress and shared strategies and advice on managing stress, tailored to resonate with the teen audience. She presented on the CDRC’s resilience-building education program, Blue Steel. The goal of the presentation was to equip high schoolers with practical tools and knowledge to take care of their mental well-being.

CDRC Faculty and Staff Participate in the NAMI North TX Walk

CDRC faculty and staff participated in the National Alliance on Mental Illness North Texas Walk held at Riders Field in Frisco. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the team joined the NAMI Walk by volunteering at a CDRC informational booth, as well as by walking the concourse to promote awareness of mental health and reduce the stigma.

Dr. Jane Foster Participates as a Member of the Neuroscience School of Advanced Studies Course

Dr. Jane Foster, PhD, participated as a faculty member for the Neuroscience School of Advanced Studies Course held last month in Venice, Italy. The Advanced Course – focused on Microbiota and the Brain - brought together international leaders to discuss the mechanisms underpinning microbiota to brain communication and address key questions around directionality and causality. In speaking on, “Host Genetic-Microbiome Interactions” Dr. Foster highlighted how nature and nurture contribute to one’s microbiome and microbiota-to-brain communication. Faculty focused on all aspects of microbiome science from basic science, clinical medicine, and population-based perspectives and how it interfaces with neuroimmunology, neuroendocrinology, nutrition, neurology & psychiatry.

Dr. Fuller and Dr. Harper for GEM

Drs. Tobi Fuller and Erin Harper represented the CDRC at several GEM (Girls Empowered by Mavericks) speaking engagements during the months of April and May, covering the topic of mental health for athletes and students, as well stress management, resilience, and coping mechanisms. Each talk was schedule to be delivered to 40-150 girls ranging from 8 years old to high school from JJ Pearce High School, Lake Highlands Family YMCA and Highland Park High School, respectively. CDRC Members Show Solidarity for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Members of the CDRC showed their support and solidarity of sexual assault survivors and victims during April’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month by wearing denim. Celebrated every year on the last Wednesday of April, Denim Day started as a campaign against sexual assault apologists. Additionally, April 2024 marked the official 23rd anniversary of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Dr. Carmen Cruz tasked a large private practice, Terra Therapies, in Fort Worth at a monthly lunch and learn: “How to Keep Working on my Multicultural Competence in a Divisive Cultural Climate.” She engaged the audience in intentional self-reflection regarding personal/professional work on multicultural competence and to reflect on the impact of social stressors on self, as a professional in a helper/healer role.

Dr. Amber Deane served as panel moderator during the UTSW CTSA Program Community Engagement Symposium held in April at Pegasus Park. During the symposium breakout session, Dr. Deane moderated as panelist discussed “A Community-Based, Recovery-Oriented Suicide Prevention Program for Young Adults.” Presenters spoke about their various organizations geared toward assisting transitional age youth by providing inspiration, support, and empowerment.

The CDRC and Texas Health Behavioral Health Leadership

The CDRC welcomed Texas Health Behavioral Health leadership to the Dallas center to discuss collaboration in measurement-based care in their clinical settings. It was wonderful to highlight our various research programs for the future of mental wellness and novel treatment options.

Blue Steel Resilience Building Program Pilot

The first cohort of students recently completed a novel resilience building program created from research gathered within our very own CDRC - Blue Steel. Student athletes from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) engaged in principles of positive psychology empowering students with resilience building strategies for use throughout their lifetime. This education initiative has gained significant momentum since August 2023, and to date has impacted 346 students across 11 different sports. Under the direction of Dr. Madhukar Trivedi, Adrienne Mays, DDS, MEd leads the Blue Steel program implementation. Other members of the Blue Steel team include Amber Barker, MA, Lynnel Goodman PhD, Erin Harper, PhD, Chen Lin, MS, and Shane Snyder PhD.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Dr. Jane Foster, PhD, was featured in Microbiome Insights blog for International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Women and Girls in Science – recognized on February 11 – is a chance to promote full and equal participation in science for women and girls. Dr. Foster’s work at the UTSW Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care involves basic and clinical research, while investigating how microbes and the immune system affect the brain and behavior, focusing primarily on how the impact pertains to depression. The research linking gut microbiomes to anxiety has been underway for some time now, and Dr. Foster’s work continues to elevate, as she expresses in the blog post, “Our biomarker research program at the CDRC aims to use a microbiome-informed approach that can lead to the development and validation of a blood or stool test to directly guide prevention and intervention approaches for depression in psychiatry – and more broadly, in the context of physical health conditions.”

Inspirational Mentor Award

CDRC Manager of Clinical Research, Ronny Pipes, was chosen as a recipient of the Business Resource Group (BRG) Inspirational Mentor Award for his contribution as a mentor during the 2023 program cycle. His mentee, Trizzy Bui, spoke of Ronny’s “unwavering dedication and commitment beyond the ordinary.” She also highlighted how engaging Ronny was and his guidance in her journey over the past year, a year that included Trizzy receiving two promotions. Upon acceptance of the award, Ronny focused on Trizzy’s commitment to her personal and professional goals, noting he had the privilege and opportunity to watch the “rising star grow and succeed.” Ronny was honored during the 2024 Mentorship Program Launch on January 31, commending his commitment to “fostering growth, providing insightful guidance, and serving as an inspiration to others” a sentiment shared with all.

TX-YDSRN Symposium

In September, the Texas Youth Depression and Suicide Research Network (TX-YDSRN) hosted a scientific symposium to bring partners from across the state of Texas together with the goal to foster collaboration and shape the vision for the upcoming biennium. Presentations from across the Network highlighted significant accomplishments and best practices. Scientific sessions provided an avenue for faculty and staff from each partnering institution to share their work utilizing data from the TX-YDSRN Registry study and inspire new areas to explore and publish. Tailored workshops catered to scientific writers, aspiring academics, and clinical coordinators imparting valuable insights. The symposium facilitated collaboration, examined procedures, encouraged innovation, and mapped out a path for expansion and enhanced success.

Dr. Trivedi Joins Media Outlet, KERA's Think Segment on Teen Suicide

According to a new study, 90 percent of Texas youth being treated for depression reported suicidal thoughts. Dr. Madhukar Trivedi is a psychiatry professor, chief of the Division of Mood Disorders and the founding director of the Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care at the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He joins host Krys Boyd to discuss why suicide attempts and suicidal ideation have increased in the last decade and how the medical community and parents can help.

The CDRC's rTMS for Stimulant Use Disorders (CTN-0108) Study Reaches 45 Randomized Participants

The purpose of the study is to determine feasibility of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for individuals with moderate to severe cocaine or methamphetamine use disorder (CUD/MUD). The study is a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial comparing rTMS vs. placebo delivered over an 8-week treatment period. After assessment and inclusion into the study, participants are randomized to receive up to 30 sessions of either rTMS or placebo treatments.

CDRC Research Initiative Receives Recognition from UT Southwestern's Newsroom

The UTSW-led study included data on a diverse population of 8- to 20-year-olds receiving care in a participating clinic who screened positive for depression and/or suicidal ideation or behavior. Researchers found that they had moderate to severe depression and anxiety. Those who had attempted suicide or had suicidal ideation had more severe mental illness, poorer school adjustment and social connectedness, lower resilience, and higher rates of trauma exposure than those without suicidality, data showed.

CDRC Study Findings Show Accelerated Brain Aging Predicts Less Antidepressant Efficacy

Patients whose brains appear older on scans than their chronological age showed less improvement on sertraline, a first-line drug treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), researchers from UT Southwestern Medical Center reported. The findings, published in Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging, could eventually lead to new ways to predict the effectiveness of medications for patients with MDD, which affects hundreds of millions worldwide.

Dr. Trivedi Leads CME Course for Tarrant County Clinical Professionals

Dr. Trivedi kicked off the school year by providing additional education to Tarrant County Psychiatrists, Residents and Medical students on Treatment Resistant Depression. The presentation poses questions raised by the treatment resistant depression (TRD) heuristic for biomarker research and engaged the clinical audience in addressing the questions of whether biomarker discovery has advanced far enough to be able to prospectively identify TRD, assist with treatment matching and assess risk.

New TX-YDSRN Publication in the November Issue of the Journal of Affective Disorders

A recent CDRC Faculty publication will be highlighted this November in the Journal of Affective Disorders. The title, Texas Youth Depression and Suicide Research Network (TX-YDSRN) research registry and learning healthcare network: Rationale, design, and baseline characteristics covers finding from one of the CDRC's core networks. The TX-YDSRN is one of the largest prospective longitudinal cohort registries designed to develop predictive models for outcome trajectories based on disorder heterogeneity, social determinants of health, and treatment availability.

CDRC Seminar with Dr. Nicolas Murphy

Dr. Nicholas Murphy will present at the CDRC Dallas site on "Decoding the Matrix: Using Electrophysiological Biomarkers to Enhance the Treatment of Depression".
Dr. Murphy is an assistant professor of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine. After graduating from Newcastle University, UK, he completed fellowships in biomarker development for psychosis and mood disorders at UT Health and Baylor College of Medicine respectively. Dr. Murphy's research program uses neurophysiological measures of brain activity to identify patterns of information that can be exploited to design biomarkers of mood, trauma, and suicide disorders. His program objective is to create scalable biomarkers that can be easily applied in everyday clinical settings to guide practitioner judgement, and to reduce the cost-burden of failed treatments for patients.

We proudly joined the Hope-4-Kids Foundation at their Back to School "Community Kickback" event on August 9, 2023, at Sycamore Park. Approximately 175 people were in attendance. Hope-4-Kids is a pillar of support for children and families in Fort Worth, offering essential resources such as food and clothing to help them thrive. Ashley Lowery, Clinical Research Coordinator I, represented the CDRC, and had an opportunity to share information about our research and prevention programs.

The CDRC's Newest Faculty Member Receives Fellow Status from the APA

Dr. Carmen Cruz received Fellow Status in Counseling Psychology from the American Psychological Association at the 2023 Annual Convention. Dr. Cruz attended the APA conference in Washington D.C. and provided a Fellows Talk to membership. The name of her talk was “Sometimes It Takes Time to Catch Up to How Others See Us.” Fellow status is an honor bestowed upon APA members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology. Fellow status requires that a person's work has had a national impact on the field of psychology beyond a local, state or regional level, in order to receive this distinction.

CDRC Joins the 27th Annual Dallas Mayor’s Back to School Fair

The Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care (CDRC) attended the 27th Annual Dallas Mayor’s Back to School Fair on Friday, August 4, 2023 at Fair Park where Mayor Eric Johnson hosted the signature event. The fair provides Dallas students and families with essential school supplies, valuable services, and community resources; the CDRC is proud to be involved in the Dallas community to continue impact in setting up the youth of Dallas for success. The annual event had an estimated 12,000 students and their families attend, and is a collaborative partnership between the City of Dallas, the Junior League of Dallas, Dallas ISD, nonprofits, corporations, and community volunteers such as the CDRC to serve students and their families.

The CDRC Joins Castleberry ISD (CISD) for Back-to-School Event

In an effort to expand the CDRC's reach in Fort Worth, Dr. Erin Harper attended the Castleberry ISD (CISD) Back-to-School Kick-Off Employee Pep Rally, an event that drew the entire CISD Staff. This provided an invaluable opportunity for the CDRC to engage with the district's school psychologists, social workers, behavior specialists, teachers, and other dedicated staff members to share essential information about our Center’s cutting-edge research and impactful prevention programs.
