Post COVID-19 Neuro-Cognitive Manifestations and Underlying Mechanisms in Older African Americans (CCARE)

Keywords: COVID-19, African Americans, Dementia, Cognitive

This observational study explores the neurological and cognitive impact of COVID-19 infections in the African American population age 50+. The study will explore the relationship between medical conditions known to be risk factors (diabetes, high blood pressure) for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias after COVID-19 infections. Researchers hope to gain a better understanding of how COVID-19 affects cognition or the brain’s function and what risk factors are associated with lasting cognitive impairment following COVID-19 infection.

Remembrance Research Cohort (RRC) Study

Keywords: Dallas Heart Study, Lumbar Puncture, Memory Diseases, Cognitive, Heart and Memory

This study is inviting the all adults 18 years old and older and the Dallas Heart study participants for a one-time visit with the UT Southwestern Neurology Department. Our goal is to check how the heart might affect memory and the brain. In order to do that, we would like to perform a brief memory screen (if applicable) and check for signs of inflammation or excess protein in the brain which may lead to memory loss. To do this we will obtain a blood sample and a sample of your fluid that surrounds the brain. This procedure uses technology that is designed to minimize injury and pain. By enrolling, you are assisting us in understanding how the heart may affect memory which may help in better treatment of memory diseases.
