Research
The BraNiC lab is dedicated to developing advanced methods for assessing the potential for brain function recovery after severe brain injuries. We use non-invasive assessments of neuronal and cerebrovascular function in the intensive care unit to characterize physiological impairments in patients with traumatic and non-traumatic coma. Current research projects include:
- Electroencephalography (EEG) derived brain network dynamics for prediction of coma recovery
- Influence of acute cerebrovascular dysfunction on EEG and fMRI-based network dynamics and clinical recovery in disorders of consciousness
- Predictive modeling using clinical data and time series analyses
Meet the PI
Kartavya Sharma, M.D.
Kartavya Sharma, M.D., received his medical degree at AIIMS, New Delhi, where his research in Velayudhan Mohan Kumar's lab revealed a novel role for the rat perirhinal cortex in male rat sexual behavior. As a neurology resident at UT Southwestern, working in Shuxin Li's lab, he investigated potential pharmacotherapies to promote axon regeneration after optic nerve and spinal cord injuries. Following a Neurocritical Care fellowship in at Johns Hopkins University, his work has focused on quantifying recovery potential following severe brain injuries.
He published the first quantitative meta-analysis of serum neuron-specific enolase thresholds for predicting anoxic brain injury outcomes and quantified bromocriptine's efficacy in reducing neurogenic fever in hospitalized patients. Since joining the UT Southwestern Neurology faculty in 2020, his ongoing TRC4 grant-funded research explores the effects of cerebrovascular dysfunction on EEG and fMRI-derived brain network dynamics in severe traumatic brain injuries.
