Conrad Lab

RNA Biology Meets Herpes Virology

The overarching goals of our lab are to understand the posttranscriptional mechanisms of gene expression and regulation in the Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and its human host cell. We are particularly focused on the mechanisms and regulation of nuclear RNA stability, polyadenylation, and mRNA processing by viral and by host cell factors.

Nicholas K. Conrad, Ph.D.

Professor of Microbiology

Dr. Conrad earned his BS at Penn State and subsequently performed postbaccalaureate research in cancer biology at NIH. As a graduate student at Johns Hopkins, he began his career-long pursuit of basic research in the gene regulation field. He earned his PhD in the lab of Dr. Jeffry Corden where he examined the connections between transcription and RNA processing. Dr. Conrad next performed postdoctoral studies in Dr. Joan Steitz’ lab at Yale. Here, he expanded his interests in RNA biology to include posttranscriptional gene regulation in the Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). He has been in the Microbiology Department at UT Southwestern since 2007 where his research program continues to investigate posttranscriptional gene regulation in KSHV and its human host cells.
